Highlights of Holland
Highlights of Holland is an interactive journey through the best of the Netherlands — and Yellowspot provided all the technology that brings the experience to life.
The Challenge
Highlights of Holland is a permanent experience that introduces international visitors to the most iconic aspects of Dutch culture — from clog dancing and tulip fields to Amsterdam Pride and the busiest cycling streets in the world. The concept called for a technical infrastructure that brings all these worlds to life: seamless, reliable, and impressive.
Yellowspot was responsible for the complete technical realization, from the delivery and installation of all audiovisual hardware to show control, interactive installations, and custom-developed software.
The Experience
The experience consists of eight thematic spaces, each with its own atmosphere, storyline, and technical setup.
Water Ride
Visitors take a seat in a canal boat and embark on a journey through Dutch highlights from both the present and history — from the North Sea Flood of 1953 to the construction of the Delta Works. Surround projection creates the illusion that the boat is sailing while it is stationary: an immersive experience that tells the story of the Netherlands and its relationship with water in an impressive way.
Bikes & Beats
In Bikes & Beats, visitors collaboratively build a music track — literally while cycling. The speed at which the group pedals determines the outcome: too slow or too fast, and the music sounds off. Only when everyone finds the right rhythm does something beautiful emerge. A clever and playful experience that rewards collaboration.
Mighty Mill
In the Mighty Mill, the iconic Dutch windmill takes center stage — but it is not a passive experience. Visitors are challenged to escape from the mill in an immersive combination of image, sound, and interactivity.
Tulip Trip
An audiovisual spectacle centered around the most recognizable symbol of the Netherlands, supported by a carefully tuned light and sound design that takes visitors into a mesmerizing tulip field.
Clogs & Chaos
Visitors can transform themselves into authentic old Dutch attire and take photos — either alone or as a group. A popular and personal highlight of the visit.
Art Room
In the Art Room, visitors become the models for works by Vermeer, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt. An interactive photo experience where the boundary between visitor and artwork blurs.
Mystic Museum
In the Mystic Museum, three icons of Dutch painting — the Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Night Watch, and works by Van Gogh — literally come to life. The characters leave their canvas and embark on a quest for the missing pearl. A unique storytelling experience where centuries-old art and modern technology go hand in hand.
The Dutch Drop
The experience concludes with The Dutch Drop: a slide that brings visitors outside with a big smile.
The Technology
An experience of this scale requires a robust, well-integrated technical backbone. Yellowspot designed, delivered, and realized:
AV Delivery & Installation
Yellowspot handled the selection, delivery, and complete installation of all screens and audiovisual hardware in the nine thematic spaces. From custom displays to large-scale projections — everything was measured, assembled, and commissioned by our team.
Show Control — the Beating Heart
All technical layers of the experience — image, sound, light, and interactivity — come together in the show control system that Yellowspot developed custom. This system is the heart of the installation: it orchestrates every screen, every light scene, and every audio channel in perfect harmony, so that the visitor experiences not technology, but one fluid, immersive experience.
CueHOH — Custom Software for Visitor Flow Management
In addition to show control, Yellowspot developed CueHOH: a fully custom-built software system that manages the flow of visitors through the attraction. Groups are organized and tracked as they move from space to space. The system ensures that each group sees the right show at the right time — in the right language, with the right timing. CueHOH runs in the background, invisible to the visitor, but essential for a smooth and consistent experience — day after day, group after group.
Image & Projection
Multiple screens and large-scale projections per space, each with its own content that synchronizes with light and sound. In the interactive spaces, the content responds live to visitor movements.
Sound
A multi-layered audio system with ambient sounds, music, and sound effects per space — ranging from the hectic city to the tranquility of the polder.
Light
Each space features a separate lighting design that enhances the atmosphere of the content and automatically adjusts with the show flow.
Network & Management
A fully documented infrastructure with remote monitoring, allowing the team to observe and intervene as needed from a distance.
Scale & Complexity
With over 1,300 items on the technical production list, eight thematic spaces, and a fully custom-built show control system, Highlights of Holland is one of the most extensive permanent installations that Yellowspot has realized. The delivery in December 2025 marked the result of months of intensive collaboration with the client, content partners, and suppliers.
